Join us at IFF to discuss how to sustain open source products

We'll be hosting a discussion about open source governance models and building successful open source communities.

By HURIDOCS on

We’re excited for another week of knowledge-exchange at the Internet Freedom Festival in Valencia (March 6-10)! We’re especially looking forward to talking to other open source developers about how we can ensure the sustainability of open source products.

Most of the tech aspirations and objectives we pursue in the human rights and internet freedom communities are based on FOSS by necessity. That is, transparency, security, openness for modification/adaptation to different contexts, etc. But starting a successful FOSS project is challenging.

Gathering the right people around the project, building a user community, funding and making it sustainable over time are just a few examples of the potential pitfalls. As many of us work in organizations currently engaged in FOSS development, the IFF is a great opportunity to gather together and share experiences and ideas around:

  • Establishing coding standards and other contribution policies
  • Agree on the vision and in which features to invest the always scarce resources
  • Governance and other decision making processes
  • Creating a user base
  • Attract contributors

This session will be a conversation about open source governance models and exploration into best practices for building successful open source communities that engage both an active group of committed developers as well as highly functioning users and maintain constant streams of funding.

What structures facilitate successful communication and create the conditions for FOSS products to thrive? We hope you’ll join us for this discussion!
