Uwazi: A digital public good that strengthens the global human rights community

By Klara Kucerova on

First awarded in 2022 by the Digital Public Good Alliance, this distinction acknowledges Uwazi’s crucial role in promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16).

How does Uwazi contribute to the global human rights community?

Uwazi enables organisations and individuals to document, organise and share critical information on human rights securely and effectively.

Not only does Uwazi support the documentation of human rights violations, but also aids in the pursuit of justice and accountability, by facilitating the sharing and analysis of information athat can drive meaningful change.

In an age where misinformation can undermine democratic processes and human rights are increasingly under threat, Uwazi’s adaptability and commitment to privacy compliance have proven essential.

A collaborative effort

Uwazi’s ongoing development and recognition are also a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines digital public goods. By adhering to open-source principles, Uwazi encourages other stakeholders to contribute to its development, ensuring that it remains a robust and effective tool in the fight for human rights.

What are digital public goods?

Digital public goods are open-source software, open data, open AI models, open standards and open content that adhere to privacy and other applicable laws, use best practices, do no harm, and help to attain the SDGs. Digital public goods are freely and openly available and can be distributed, adapted and reused with minimal restrictions.

The Digital Public Goods Alliance, a multi-stakeholder initiative endorsed by the United Nations Secretary-General, promotes digital public goods to create a more equitable world. Open projects that have the potential to tackle global challenges and adhere to open principles as defined by the Digital Public Goods Standard are recognised as digital public goods. The DPG Standard itself is an open project and open to contribution on the public GitHub repository.
